Karina Canellakis Information
Karina Canellakis (August 23, 1981) is an American violinist and conductor. She was born in New York City. She then attended and graduated from the Curtis Academy of Music in 2004, where she studied under the tutelage of music legend Ida Kavafian. She is an accomplished violinist who has filled in with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and led the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra as a special conductor. Canellakis performed as a fiddler for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchester-Akademie from 2005 to 2007.
She was interested in conducting while in Berlin, and Simon Rattle bolstered that desire. Between 2011 and 2013, she attended The Juilliard School to study conducting with Alan Gilbert. At the Pacific Music Festival, she took conducting lessons from Fabio Luisi. To her credit, she won the Taki Concordia Conducting Scholarship in 2013. Her tenure as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's assistant director lasted from 2014 to 2016.
In October 2014, early in her tenure in Dallas, she filled in for Jaap van Zweden as an emergency substitute, conducting Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 without a dress practice. Her contemporary music work includes conducting the world debut of David Lang's chamber opera The Loser in September 2016, as well as performances with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). In 2015, Canellakis debuted in Europe with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe after being called in as Nikolaus Harnoncourt's last-minute replacement.
