An American musician, Joyce Wrice was born in San Diego, California. Wrice was reared as a Buddhist by his African-American father and Japanese mother. He found early musical inspiration in R&B artists like Brandy and Mariah Carey. She relocated to Los Angeles after receiving her 2013 Soka University diploma and immediately started working on new music. After waiting three years, in 2016, she dropped her debut EP Stay Around, which featured collaborations with SiR, Mndsgn, J.LBS, Chuk Le Garcon, and DJ Harrison.
Wrice's first album, Overgrown, was published on March 19, 2021, after she had released several singles (including "Good Morning") commercially and on her SoundCloud over several years. The album, executive produced by Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II, included Lucky Daye, Westside Gunn, Masego, Kaytranada, and Devin Morrison and was promoted by the singles "So So Sick" and "On One," which featured Freddie Gibbs.
