Josiah Johnson, formerly the lead singer and co-founder of Seattle's indie folk band the Head and the Heart, went on indefinite hiatus from the group in the late 2010s and returned as a solo performer in the early 2020s. In 2020, he released Every Feeling on a Loop on the ANTI- label as a passionate solo début, retaining some of the band's signature exuberant chamber folk and pop tone.
Johnson's love of music overtook his more practical mathematics and computer science college major. A chance meeting at a Seattle open mic in 2009 resulted in creating the Head and the Heart. After two critically acclaimed recordings for Sub Pop, the Head, and the Heart broke through to the mainstream with their third studio effort, Signs of Light, which Warner Bros released.
Despite his struggles with addiction, Johnson was able to finish the record in time for its September 2016 release. However, he decided to leave the band several months before the album's release. The Head and the Heart reached their best chart position to date with the release of Signs of Light, which was named after one of his tracks and peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. Despite the album's success, Johnson canceled all further tours and ultimately quit the band to focus on his sobriety.
