Joshua Hopkins Information
Joshua Hopkins is a Canadian baritone vocalist born in Pembroke, Ontario. He sang in his first oratorio, Haydn's Creation, when he was only 16. After attending McGill University in Montreal and receiving a master's degree in 2003, Joshua Hopkins was allowed to enter into the Houston Grand Opera studio. In September 2002, he won prizes in several prominent competitions, such as José Carreras presented him with the first-place award in the Julián Gayarre International Singing Competition. Not only this, but he was a National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera's 2003 National Council Auditions and winner in the 2005 Plácido Domingo Operalia Competition. Joshua Hopkins is also the winner of the 2006 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, the Verbier Festival Academy's 2008 Prix d'Honneur, the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award of the Canada Council for the Arts, and the list goes on.
Joshua Hopkins is known as an outstanding young baritone with a virile, vigorous yet velvety sound. Some of his notable opera highlights of past seasons include performances of Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at Arizona Opera, Guglielmo in Così fan Tutte at Madison Opera, Marcello in La bohème at the Houston Grand Opera, Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro at Opera Pacific, The Rape of Lucretia with the Central City Opera, and many more.
Joshua Hopkins has been sighted in many concerts with the symphonies of Baltimore, Houston Symphony Orchestra, Montreal, Edmonton, Quebec, and L'Orchestre Métropolitain, National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and Les Violons du Roy. Let Beauty Awake was Hopkins's first recital disc featuring songs of Bowles, Glick, Barber, and Vaughan Williams.
