Joshua B. Ritter (October 21, 1976) is an American author, singer, musician, and songwriter born in Moscow, Idaho. Ritter attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, after graduating from Moscow High School in 1995. Although he was born into a family of neuroscientists, he opted to study something else at Oberlin College, where he developed an independent degree in "American History Through Narrative Folk Music." Ritter used a university recording studio to create his self-titled debut album when he was just 21 years old.
Ritter has cited many authors as influences on his writings and songwriting, demonstrating his interest in literature. Dennis Lehane (who penned the introduction for the Deluxe Edition of Hello Starling), Flannery O'Connor, and Philip Roth are among his favorite authors. So Runs the World Away, Ritter's sixth studio album, is named after a passage from Hamlet's third act.
See Here, I Have Built You a Mansion is an eight-track extended play (EP) by Ritter that came out on August 28, 2020. It has rare and unpublished tracks, some intended for Gathering but "didn't quite fit the shape of that record." The EP also featured a cover of "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits and a live rendition of "Lawrence, Kansas." The album's lead song, "Time is Wasting," was released on August 19, 2020.
