Jorma Kaukonen Information
Jorma Kaukonen (December 23, 1940) is an American rock, blues, and folk guitarist. After leaving Washington, Kaukonen enrolled at Antioch College, where he learned fingerstyle guitar from his buddy Ian Buchanan. Reverend Gary Davis's music was also introduced to Kaukonen by Buchanan; Kaukonen has continued to feature Davis's songs extensively in his performances. Before the dissolution, Kaukonen released the album Quah in 1974, marking the beginning of his solo career.
Along with Tom Constanten, who had previously played keyboards for the Grateful Dead, he recorded multiple versions of "Embryonic Journey" in 1993. In 1994, the Relix label issued the album Embryonic Journey, comprised of the tunes produced. He performed with Phil Lesh and Friends on multiple occasions in 1999. He appeared on the summer 2000 tour with the jam band Widespread Panic. He received a Grammy Award nomination in 2002 for his album Blue Country Heart.
Kaukonen and his wife Vanessa run the Fur Peace Ranch, a music and guitar camp on 119 acres (0.48 km2) in the hills of southeast Ohio, north of Pomeroy. The ranch has a 32-track studio. Even though he's signed with Red House Records as a solo artist, he continues to record and perform as Hot Tuna with Jack Casady and other pals like Barry Mitterhoff. Been So Long: My Life and Music, Kaukonen's autobiography, was released on August 28, 2018, by St. Martin's Press.
