Jordi Savall Information
Jordi Savall i Bernadet (August 1, 1941) is a Catalan conductor and viol player from Igualada, Barcelona, Spain. Since the 1970s, Jordi Savall has been one of the major figures in the field of Western early music. He is majorly responsible for popularizing the viol family of instruments in recording and contemporary performance. His music is well-known for featuring everything from medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque and through to the periods of Classical and Romance.
At the age of 6, Savalli started his musical training in the school choir of his native Igualada (1947–55). He graduated from Barcelona's Conservatory of Music and specialized in early music. While studying with August Wenzinger at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, he collaborated with Ars Musicae de Barcelona under Enric Gispert.
Jordi Savall formed the ensemble Hespèrion XX in 1974, along with his wife soprano Montserrat Figueras, Hopkinson Smith, and Lorenzo Alpert. He founded Le Concert des Nations in 1989, which was an orchestra emphasizing Baroque period along with Classical and even Romantic music as well. Sinfonía [por] Grande Orquesta by Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga (1806-1826) is an example of this. Savall's discography includes 100+ recordings. The original recordings with EMI Classics and then from 1975 on Michel Bernstein's Astrée label. Since 1998, he is recording on his label Alia Vox.
A few of his notable discographies include 1998 - Les Voix Humaines, 1998 - La Folia, 1999 Missa Bruxellensis, 1999 - Diaspora Sefardi, 2000 Die Sonaten für Viola da Gamba und Cembalo, and the list go on. Jordi Savall has earned many honors and awards such as 2006 - Honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona, 2009 - Handel Prize from the city of Halle, Germany, 2010 - Praetorius Musikpreis Niedersachsen, 2012 - Léonie Sonning Music Prize, and 2013 - Honorary doctorate from the University of Basel.
