Jonatha Brooke (January 23, 1964) is an American guitarist, folk-rock singer, and songwriter. She was born in Illinois, United States. Brooke went to the Commonwealth School in Boston and Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1985, she received her bachelor's degree from Amherst College. After meeting at Amherst College, Jonatha Brooke and Jennifer Kimball began playing music together in the 1980s. During their undergraduate years, they performed regularly. According to one music critic, their folk tunes were characterized by "witty wordplay and rich pop harmonies."
Brooke has been compared to Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, who rose to prominence in the 1990s. Brooke embarked on a solo career in 1994. Brooke has a "beautiful soprano voice," according to one reviewer, who also enjoyed the "catchy original songs and difficult lyrics." "Brooke glides through emotional, varied melodies with her beautiful, seductive voice," People Magazine said of her first solo album, Plumb (1995).
The impact is beautiful and heartbreakingly sad on limpid compositions like "Nothing Sacred" and "Inconsolable." Billboard Magazine praised her follow-up, 10 Cent Wings, saying, "10 Cent Wings is important, like taking a big breath after witnessing something great."
Jonatha Brooke won the Overall Grand Prize and Best Female Artist at the 15th Annual IAMA (International Acoustic Music Awards) in February 2019 for her song "Put The Gun Down."
