John Sebastian Information
John Benson Sebastian (March 17, 1944) is an American guitarist, harmonicist, autoharpist, singer, and songwriter from Greenwich Village, New York City. Sebastian was raised surrounded by music and musicians such as Woody Guthrie and Burl Ives. He heard such players as Mississippi John Hurt and Lead Belly as a young child. Sebastian graduated from Blair Academy, a private boarding school, and later, he attended New York University for over a year due to his interest in music.
During his early career, Sebastian developed an interest in blues music and not in his father's classical style. He used to play guitar and harmonica during some of his early recording gigs. He worked as the significant part of the Spoonful, along with Zal Yanovsky, Steve Boone, and Joe Butler. Later on, he joined and left many acts such as Even Dozen Jug Band, The Mugwumps, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Doors, and NRBQ.
As a solo artist, Sebastian released the first in a series of solo LPs on Reprise Records in January 1970. His eponymous solo debut entitled John B. Sebastian turned out to be his highest-charting solo album. Some other notable albums include Cheapo Cheapo Productions Presents Real Live John Sebastian, The Four of Us, Tarzana Kid, and The Devil and Daniel Mouse: A Nelvana Story Album.
Sebastian is known as a notable songwriter and has been covered by many artists such as Johnny Cash ("Darlin' Companion") and Elvis Costello ("The Room Nobody Lives In"). In 2000, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an original member of The Lovin' Spoonful. Sebastian was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008.
