John McCutcheon Information
John McCutcheon (August 14, 1952) is an American folk music singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Wausau, Wisconsin. He attended Saint James Grade School and later graduated from Newman Catholic High School. McCutcheon attended Saint John's University in Minnesota. When he was 20, McCutcheon traveled to Appalachia, where he learned traditional folk music from some of the legendary greats such as Roscoe Holcomb, I.D. Stamper, and Tommy Hunter.
After becoming a father, McCutcheon found most children's music "unmusical and condescending." He planned to change this by releasing a children's album entitled Howjadoo, in 1983. This album became a major success, and McCutcheon released seven additional children's records in addition to writing three children's books. A significant part of his work is focused on writing politically and socially conscious songs for adult audiences. One of his hit songs is "Christmas in the Trenches."
McCutcheon has become known as a storyteller now. He has made many appearances at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Some of his notable studio albums are How Can I Keep from Singing?, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, From Earth To Heaven, Barefoot Boy with Boots On, Fine Times at Our House, Winter Solstice, Water from Another Time: A Retrospective, Between the Eclipse, Nothing to Lose, and Supper's on the Table.
His books include Happy Adoption Day (1996), Christmas in the Trenches (2006), and Flowers for Sarajevo (2017). McCutcheon has also received six Grammy nominations to date.
