John Digweed Information
John Digweed (January 1, 1967) is a British record producer and DJ. He was born in Hastings, England. At the tender age of 15, Digweed started spinning records and quickly became a local celebrity in his native Hastings, where he hosted several sold-out club nights and parties at which acts like Carl Cox and The Prodigy performed.
In 1993, Geoff Oakes, owner of the Renaissance club in Mansfield, heard a mixtape demo of his that he had sent to him, and he played it to fellow DJ Alexander Coe (aka Sasha), who was immediately impressed. Despite Sasha not showing up for two separate performances that Digweed had booked him for in Hastings, the two DJs became fast friends and began working together.
In 1994, Digweed and Sasha published Renaissance: The Mix Collection, a compilation of mixes widely regarded as the first commercial compilation for a nightclub and a major factor in Digweed's reputation for promoting progressive house. DJs had passed around club mixtapes on an informal basis until that point.
With the Renaissance CD, artwork and marketing were carefully considered for the first time in a compilation CD's history. This was followed by the legendary compilations the two DJs released on Northern Exposure and Global Underground.
