Joe Louis Walker Information
Joe Louis Walker (December 25, 1949) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer from San Francisco. He is also known as JLW, and his music is classified as electric blues. Walker came from a musical family and shared his early influences as Meade Lux Lewis, Amos Milburn, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, and Pete Johnson. He was only eight when he first picked up the guitar. By the age of 16, he was known within the Bay Area music scene. Walker began performing publicly as a teenager, soaking up influences such as James Brown, Bobby Womack, and Wilson Pickett.
During the early years of his career, Walker shared the stage with Buddy Miles, Otis Rush, Thelonious Monk, The Soul Stirrers, John Lee Hooker, J.J. Malone, Willie Dixon, Charlie Musselwhite, Steve Miller, Nick Lowe, and many more. He formed a strong bond with Mike Bloomfield by 1968, and the two were roommates for many years. After the death of Bloomfield, Walker changed his lifestyle and enrolled himself at San Francisco State University. He earned a degree in music and English, and, at the same time, he was performing with The Spiritual Corinthians Gospel Quartet.
Walker ultimately was signed by Polygram to their Verve/Gitanes record label and released some of his Polygram releases such as Blues Survivor in 1993. His other notable albums are JLW 1994, Blues of the Month Club 1995, Preacher and the President 1998, She's My Money Maker 2003, Witness to the Blues 2008, Between A Rock and The Blues 2009, and Everybody Wants a Piece 2015. Walker has worked with many record labels so far, including HighTone, Provogue, Evidence Music, JSP, Stony Plain, Verve Records/Gitanes, and Alligator Records.
