Joe Hisaishi Information
Mamoru Fujisawa (December 6, 1950), better known by his stage name, Joe Hisaishi, is a well-respected Japanese composer, musical director, conductor, and pianist. He has released over a hundred film soundtracks and solo recordings since 1981.
Minimalist, experimental electronic, Western classical, and Japanese classical are just some musical styles that Hisaishi has been known to combine into his compositions. He has also worked as a music arranger and music engraver.
Since 1984, Hisaishi has worked closely with Japanese filmmaker and animator Hayao Miyazaki, scoring all but one of Miyazaki's films.
Among Hisaishi's many accolades are seven Best Music Academy Awards in Japan. He has won the Newcomer Award from the Ministry of Education's Public Entertainment Section (1997), the Art Choice Award for New Artist from the Popular Performing Arts Division (1998), the Music Prize from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for "Howl's Moving Castle" in 2005, and the Best Original Score from the Television Division of the International Film Music Critics Association for the Korean drama Queen Shikigami in 2008.
Red Fox Scholar (Original Soundtrack), a soundtrack album for the 2021 film Soul Snatcher, was released digitally on February 19. It included 34 tracks ranging from 25 seconds to almost five minutes.
Hisaishi contributed to a Royal Shakespeare Company stage version of "My Neighbor Totoro" that year (2022). Even though Hisaishi had already issued numerous albums on the Deutsche Grammophon label before March 30, 2023, he signed an exclusive recording arrangement with the company.
