Joanna Frankel Information
In September 2016, violinist Joanna Frankel was appointed concertmaster of the Columbus Symphony for the 2016/17 season. Since the commencement of the 2017–18 season, she has served as concertmaster. Ms. Frankel, born in Philadelphia in 1982, started playing the violin at three, following The Suzuki Method. She studied under Jascha Brodsky, C. J. Chang, Robert Chen, Masao Kawasaki, Cho-Liang Lin, and Joseph Kalichstein while at The Juilliard School in New York, where she was awarded the coveted William Schuman Prize.
Ms. Frankel continued her education beyond college by enrolling in Carnegie Hall's innovative "The Academy," which prepares talented young musicians to lead in the arts in the twenty-first century. She has performed in concertos and recitals worldwide, including in the Netherlands, Russia, Estonia, Slovakia, Finland, the Middle East, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and all over the United States.
Marlboro Music Festival, Harare International Festival of the Arts, Johannesburg Mozart Festival, and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are just a few of the festivals she has performed at. USA's Spoleto and Aspen music festivals. Ms. Frankel was the first concertmaster of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic in Durban, South Africa, from 2013 to 2016, and she was also the first violinist of the orchestra's principal string quartet during that time. She plays a fiddle made by Gaetano Vinaccia in Naples in 1819.
