Joan Manuel Serrat Information
Joan Manuel Serrat (December 27, 1943) is a Spanish composer, singer, and musician. He was born in Barcelona, Spain. His songs often depict Catalonia after the Spanish Civil War, reflecting the influence of his upbringing and the surroundings of his neighborhood.
One of Serrat's first songs, "Una guitarra," is a dedication to the first guitar he ever owned, which he got when he was 17. The young musician played in a pop band in the early 1960s with fellow students from Barcelona's Agronomy School. They played mostly covers of Beatles songs and Italian "pop-of-the-era" tunes spoken in Spanish.
In January 1995, he received a medal from the Spanish government for his work in advancing Hispanic culture. In the same year, musicians, including Diego Torres, Ketama, Rosario Flores, Joaqun Sabina, and Antonio Flores, came together to record a tribute album to Serrat called Serrat, eres Nico. His "Nadie es Perfecto" tour hit various Latin American countries that same year.
Serrat performed at the University of Lima in Lima, Peru, in February 1995. During the FC Barcelona Centenary festival at Camp Nou on November 28, 1998, Serrat sang the Cant del Barça. In 2000, he received one of ten Medals of the Century from the Spanish Association of Authors and Editors (SGAE).
