Jimmie Lawrence Vaughan Jr. (March 20, 1951) is an American blues rock singer and guitarist. He was born in Oak Cliff, Dallas. Vaughan attended L V. Stockard Junior High in Dallas, Texas, where on February 3, 1965, he performed for the first time with his friends Phil Campbell and Ronny Sterling under the moniker The Pendulums or the JSPs. In the late '60s, Vaughan relocated to Austin, where he joined the bands of other musicians like Paul Ray and WC Clark.
Vaughan and his band supported Jimi Hendrix and the Experience in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1969. Jimi Hendrix broke Vaughan's Vox Wah-wah pedal that he borrowed for this performance. Hendrix repaid Vaughan with a tour-ready Wah-wah pedal. Jimmie Vaughan created a unique sound that was instantly recognizable. He established the band The Fabulous Thunderbirds with lead singer/harpist Kim Wilson, bassist Keith Ferguson, and drummers Mike Buck and Fran Christina.
(Clifford Antone, owner of a blues bar in Austin, Texas, mentored the first Fabulous Thunderbirds). The band's first four albums, issued between 1979 and 1983, are rated among the most notable 'white blues' records. Vaughan has also engaged in some political activity. In 2008, he supported Ron Paul for president and played at the University of Texas before one of Paul's addresses.
