Jessy Lanza is an electronic songwriter, vocalist, and producer from Hamilton, Ontario, and grew up playing piano and clarinet. Jessy went to Concordia University to study jazz. Her music is defined as techno-pop, R&B, and electronic. Before beginning her career as a singer and music producer, Jessy was employed as a music teacher, though, in 2013, she was named as one of the best new artists by XLR8R.
Pull My Hair Back was the debut album by Jessy released in 2013. According to The Guardian, she was defined as "the latest and possibly greatest of the new ethereal soul girls." Her debut album ranked her #4 on Resident Advisor's Top 20 Albums of 2013. The album was co-written and co-produced with Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys. The album was released on UK's Hyperdub record label and was shortlisted for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. The soprano vocal range of Jessy Lanza is compared to that of Elizabeth Fraser and Aaliyah.
Jessy Lanza collaborated with Caribou on his Our Love album in 2014. The next year, she recorded vocals for The Galleria EP entitled Calling Card / Mezzanine. Oh No was the second album she released in 2016. The collection was shortlisted again for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize. All the Time (2020) is her latest studio album. Some notable singles are "Kathy Lee'' (2013), "Keep Moving" (2013), "5785021" (2014), "You and Me" (2014), "You Never Show Your Love" (2015), "It Means I Love You" (2016), "VV Violence" (2016), and "Lick in Heaven" (2020).
