Jesse Terry's When We Wander is the first album he's written since becoming a father. As a result, it's not surprising that several of the album's 12 tracks center around or explicitly reference family. Since he started touring professionally, his entire family has been involved in his music.
Jesse met his future wife, Jess, when working on a cruise ship in the South Pacific. "After returning to the United States in July 2010, I proposed to her in Nashville's Bluebird Cafe before we set our first tour together. Since then, we've been on the road constantly with each other." When Lily, now two years old, joined the family, everything changed for him. Family, and the need to love and protect her, became his top priority. Song lyrics: "If I were the moon, I'd light all of your back roads" To paraphrase, "You wouldn't need no headlights" and "I'd always be full."
Even though the album was recorded in 2019, the tracks already win over listeners digitally. When We Wander was a first for him, as he and his band captured it live in the studio. This time, he chose a more reflective and personal approach, writing all the music and lyrics himself without help from other musicians. His experience at a behavior rehabilitation center as a teenager is recalled in "In Spite of You," where he describes how it scarred him.
