Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Jesse Ruben's musical message is uncomplicated and straightforward. I can. This is possible. It was after completing the New York City Marathon that Ruben authored "We Can" to encourage others to take up running. It turns out he was shooting for something much grander with his statement. A Vancouver elementary school contacted him a few months after the track's release to say they had been using it as a motivational tool with their children.
They requested that Ruben fly in to play the song at their school, and thus "The We Can Project" was born and is now sweeping across North America. Ruben initiated a cross-country tour of schools to inspire young people to take action and improve their communities. Suddenly, unbelievable events started to take place. To accommodate children, playgrounds were constructed. New flower beds were created. The arranging of cancer walks. Right when momentum was building, unexpected difficulties arose.
After headlining and selling out his whole East Coast tour, Ruben was recording new music when he suddenly fell gravely ill. He saw over a dozen doctors over nine months before finally receiving a Lyme disease diagnosis. During his illness, Ruben had almost given up hope that he would ever be able to play music or return to regular life. The message he had been preaching to his students for the previous year suddenly felt more relevant than ever. That's something I'm capable of doing. It took him two whole years to get well again.
