Jefferson Choral Society Information
The Jefferson Choral Society (JCS) was incorporated as a distinct nonprofit organization in 1990 after serving as the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center Chorus for twenty-seven years. Thomas Jefferson loved classical music. Hence the name was chosen because it was close to his vacation residence, Poplar Forest. In May 1990, Norman Blake led the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra in the first-ever JCS performance of Carmina Burana, and Carl Harris was appointed the organization's music director in December of that same year.
The JCS, Central Virginia's largest classical chorus, has performed over forty masterpieces, including Mozart's Coronation Mass and Magnificat in C Major, the Magnificat by John Rutter, the Requiems of Brahms, Fauré, Duruflé, Rutter, and Verdi, Gloria by Poulenc and Vivaldi, Honeggar's King David, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Haydn's The Creation and Mass for Troubled Times.
The Washington National Cathedral, Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, the Wintergreen Performing Arts Series, and Carnegie Hall in New York are just a few of the locations where the JCS has performed, in addition to numerous locations around Central Virginia. The JCS has performed in benefit concerts at Bedford's National D-day Memorial since 2003. Ruby Viar provided the chorus's initial musical accompaniment, and since 1998, Rose Peak has provided the same support.
