JD Eicher (July 27, 1986) is an American novelist, producer, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio. After leaving Canfield High School, he majored in music and business while obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree at Westminster College (Pennsylvania) in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Jackson Brown, The Beatles, and Death Cab for Cutie are just a few of the bands Eicher counts as influences.
Eicher founded JD Eicher & the Goodnights while he was a student at Westminster College. Over the following several years, the band's lineup changed multiple times. Since 2013, Jim Merhaut on bass and Dylan Kollat on drums and percussion have remained a constant rhythm section for Eicher. The ensemble performed at venues and festivals around the country during their time in college and subsequently. Albums by Eicher include The Shape of Things, Shifting, and Into Place, which was recorded and released throughout the years.
Together, the titles spell out "The Shape of Things Shifting into Place," and the topics are connected. Eicher kept the same musical lineup for his 2016 album release, The Middle Distance, but deleted "the Goodnights" from the band's name. While Into Place and Shifting were recorded in Nashville and Bethesda, respectively, he decided to record The Middle Distance in the basement of his house in Ohio.
