Rich Hill, a guitarist based in the Philadelphia region, organized a one-off performance in March 2019 at The Fainting Goat in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, to pay tribute to the music of the Grateful Dead. Hill invited a select collection of artists to perform with him. They all realized by the time the night was over that they had something exceptional and should keep doing what they were doing since the turnout, the performances, and the synergy was so strong. At this point, "this object of ours," later dubbed the "jawn of the Dead," started its peculiar journey, which we can only hope will be a lengthy one, around the Philadelphia area.
