Jawbreaker Information
American punk rock band Jawbreaker has been performing regularly since 2017. According to James Monger of AllMusic, the band's "poetic take on a hardcore" hugely influenced the emo and punk scenes of the 1990s. After meeting as undergraduates at New York University, founding members Blake Schwarzenbach (lead vocals/guitar), Chris Bauermeister (bass), and Adam Pfahler (drums) moved to Los Angeles and released their self-titled first album on the independent label Shredder Records in 1990.
The following year, they uprooted again to San Francisco, where they released Bivouac in 1992 via Tupelo Recording Company and The Communion Label. Despite having surgery to remove painful, voice-threatening polyps from his throat, Schwarzenbach became a cult idol thanks to his charisma and intimate, furious songs. Jawbreaker caught the attention of major labels after their 1993 tour with Nirvana and the 1994 release of 24-Hour Revenge Therapy.
However, when they signed a $1 million contract with DGC Records and released 1995's Dear You, the album was met with major resentment from the band's core following due to its more polished sound and pleasant vocals. Jawbreaker broke up in 1996 due to internal strife, and frontman Schwartzenbach has always been adamant that they would never reform. But in April 2017, they announced a comeback and are working on the follow-up to Dear You.
