Javon Jackson Information
Javon Anthony Jackson (June 16, 1965) is an American educator, bandleader, saxophonist, and jazz tenor. From 1987 until Art Blakey's passing in 1990, he was a member of the Jazz Messengers, which is how he first gained notoriety. His solo work combines hard bop with elements from soul and funk and traditional and neo-jazz music. Producers Lea Reis and Bryant "Moe Doe" Johnson chose him because of his ability to perform in various styles for Tupac Shakur's Keep Ya Head Up / Madukey Remix in 1993.
In Spike Lee's Malcolm X from 1992, Javon portrayed saxophonist Illinois Jacquet. He performs the Lionel Hampton/Benny Goodman classic "Flying Home" in the movie. In 2013, he was appointed director of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford. With the launch of the Jackie McLean Jazz Studies Jazz Assembly in 2019, the Newport Festivals Foundation broadened the appeal of its well-liked Newport Jazz Assembly program.
Jackson explained his reason for instructing the next generation of musicians in a Toledo Blade piece from 2006. The Gospel According To Nikki Giovanni, Jackson's album featuring renowned poet Nikki Giovanni, was published in 2022 on his Solid Jackson label. The poet reimagines gospel hymns and spirituals set to jazz on the album's track listing.
