Jason Moran Information
Jason Moran (January 21, 1975) is an American jazz composer, pianist, and educator involved in theatrical installations and multimedia art. Born in Houston, Texas, he grew up in the Pleasantville neighborhood of Houston. His artistic and musical sensibilities were encouraged by his teacher at the Houston Symphony. When Moran was six, he began learning classical piano in the Suzuki method music school of Yelena Kurinets. As a boy, he already had developed a preference for hip hop music.
Moran attended Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and completed his graduation in 1993. Later on, he joined the Manhattan School of Music and completed his education in 1997 with a BM degree. Moran was invited to join the saxophonist Greg Osby’s band for a European Tour while acting as a senior at Manhattan School of Music.
In 1998, Moran released his debut album entitled “Soundtrack to Human Motion.” In 2000, he released his follow-up album named “Facing Left” that featured a trio from Osby’s group. Moran soon released his solo album entitled “Modernistic” in 2002. In 2003, another live trio album, “The Bandwagon,” was recorded at Village Vanguard in New York.
As a sideman, Moran has worked with several artists including Ralph Alessi, Don Byron, Scott Colley, Steve Coleman, Bunky Green, Stefon Harris, Charles Lloyd, Christians McBride, Ron Miles, Paul Motian, David Murray, Greg Osby, Eric Revis, Jenny Scheinman, Walter Smith III, Otis Taylor, Henry Threadgill, Nasheet Walts, Trio 3, and Cassandra Wilson.
