James McMurtry Information
James McMurtry (March 18, 1962) is an American folk-rock bandleader, singer, songwriter, occasional actor, and guitarist from Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, and attended the Woodberry Forest School, Orange, Virginia. Later, McMurty went to the University of Arizona in Tucson to learn Spanish and English. McMurty began performing when he was only a teen, performing his songs at a local downtown beer garden.
McMurtry traveled to Alaska to play some gigs but soon returned to Texas. After some time, he again moved to San Antonio and started doing small odd jobs. He was suggested by a friend to enter the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk songwriter contest in 1987. McMurty ended up being one of the six winners in the contest. At the same time, he also sent a demo tape to John Mellencamp, who was starring in a film based on a script by McMurtry's father. Mellencamp co-produced the debut album entitled Too Long in the Wasteland (1989) by McMurty.
Some of the other notable albums by McMurty are Candyland (1992), Where'd You Hide the Body (1995), Just Us Kids (2008), and Complicated Game (2015). He also released some live albums such as Live in Europe 2019 and Live in Aught-Three 2004. McMurty has worked with some well-known acts and artists such as Nancy Griffith, David Grissom (former lead guitarist), Guy Clark, Joe Ely, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and, as previously stated, John Mellencamp.
