James Keelaghan Information
James Keelaghan (October 28, 1959) is a folk singer-songwriter from Canada. Keelaghan calls Perth, Ontario, his home after being born in Calgary, Alberta. Justice and social issues are themes throughout many of his song lyrics. Many works in this genre draw inspiration from real-life Canadian events and personalities; for instance, "Kiri's Piano" examines the internment of Japanese Canadians, and "October 70" examines the FLQ struggle.
Keelaghan and guitarist Oscar Lopez participated in a joint workshop exploring Celtic-Latin music fusion during the 1990 Northern Lights Festival in Boréal. In subsequent albums, Compadres and ¿Buddy Where You Been?, the team would continue to delve into that subject matter. For his 1994 album My Skies, he was named Juno Album of the Year in the Roots & Traditional category. At the 8th Annual USA Songwriting Competition in 2003, Keelaghan won the folk category's top award. The band Cry Cry Cry recorded his song "Cold Missouri Waters" in 1998. Notable folk artists have also contributed to his music. Among them are Garnet Rogers and Roy Bailey.
Hugh McMillan of Spirit of the West and Stephen Fearing are regular guests on his recordings. House of Cards (2009), his most recent CD, was produced by Keelaghan and has ten brand-new original songs, some of which he co-wrote with Karine Polwart, David Francey, and others. Critics in Canada and across the world have been raving about the CD. Owen Sound's Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival has been under Keelaghan's artistic direction since 2011.
