Jake Blount Information
Jake Blount (August 8, 1995) is an American activist, musician, and scholar. He was born in Washington, DC. His mother's and father's families are non-white; she is of Swedish and Jersey descent, while he is of African descent. Julia, Blount's older sister, and he went to Georgetown Day School. His mother, Jeanne Meserve, and father, Jeffrey Blount, worked in television news. At the tender age of 12, he started taking guitar lessons and soon found himself playing in rock bands with his contemporaries. Later in high school, Blount was influenced to explore acoustic music after a chance meeting with Megan Jean and the KFB.
In 2016, Blount's band, The Moose Whisperers, won the traditional band contest at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop, West Virginia, bringing them great notoriety within the old-time community. Blount received his Bachelor of Arts in ethnomusicology from Hamilton College, released his debut EP, Reparations, with fiddler Tatiana Hargreaves, and started touring seriously in the middle of 2017. In early 2018, the Moose Whisperers released their self-titled album and toured Scandinavia in support of it. After returning, Blount and Hargreaves supported Rhiannon Giddens at a few performances.
On May 29, 2020, Blount's first solo album, Spider Tales, was released via Free Dirt Records. On the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart, it debuted at position #2. The record received five stars and was called "an immediate classic" by The Guardian.
