Jacob Jolliff is an American musician born into a musical family in Newberg, Oregon. His father taught him how to play the mandolin when he was seven years old and required him to practice for ten minutes every day. After six months of training this modest amount, something clicked, and he began putting in many hours of rigorous practice every day virtually overnight. This hasn't altered much in the last 20 years.
Jolliff played in a bluegrass gospel band with his father throughout middle and high school. They performed at festivals and churches around the northwest, and they became regular on Sunday morning gospel shows. He had the chance to meet and play with several of his heroes, including Ronnie McCoury, David Grisman, and Chris Thile. Even though Jacob was primarily self-taught at this point, lessons with great players like these kept him motivated and on track.
Jolliff received a full scholarship at The Berklee College of Music in Boston when he was 18 years old. In 2007, he and several other young musicians he had grown up with relocated to Massachusetts to begin school. He learned there under the late mandolin legend John McGann, who significantly influenced him. He spent numerous six-hour practice days working on various styles under John's direction, ranging from bluegrass to jazz to Celtic music. He joined Joy Kills Sorrow, a New England-based roots music band, during his sophomore year of college in 2008. The band traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe over the next few years, performing at hundreds of clubs, theaters, and festivals.
