Izaak Opatz Information
In contrast to Mariachi Static (2018), which drew on Opatz's broken romantic life as a seasonal Park Service worker and particularly hit home with the sensitive dirtbag set, his most recent work, Extra Medium, alternates between romantic Hindenburgs in Montana, up the East Coast, and faraway Los Angeles.
Throughout the album, Montana and LA serve as metaphorical and dramatic wellsprings and individual characters; LA is charming and uncomfortable at different points ("In the Light of a Love Affair"), and "Big Sandy" shows how Montana shifts from setting to subject, with his feelings for the state ultimately triumphing over those of the girl he is trying to win over.
Opatz met bandmates and Extra Medium colleagues Dylan Rodrigue (multi-instrumentalist, producer) and Malachi DeLorenzo (drums, producer, engineer) in Los Angeles, where he also worked with and learned from Jonny Fritz at Dad Country Leather. Currently residing in Missoula, Montana, he is a master's degree journalism student at the University of Montana. He operates his custom leather shop, and is hard at work on his upcoming album.
