Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Information

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (abbreviation IPO) is an Israeli symphony orchestra which is based in Tel Aviv. The principal concert venue for IPO is the Charles R Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv. The orchestra was founded as the Palestine Symphony Orchestra by violinist Bronislaw Huberman in the year 1936. This happened at the time of the dismissal of many Jewish musicians from European orchestras. The inaugural concert of IPO took place on December 26, 1936. Arturo Toscanini conducted it. The very first principal conductor for IPO was William Steinberg.

Lahav Shani first appeared with the IPO as a guest soloist in 2007. The musical advisors who worked for this orchestra are William Steinberg (1936–1938), Leonard Bernstein (1947–1949; Laureate Conductor, 1988–1990), Paul Paray (1949–1951), Bernardino Molinari, Jean Martinon (1957–1959), and Zubin Mehta (1969–1977). A performance by IPO that was held in London at The Proms on September 1, 2011, was badly disrupted by several pro-Palestinian protesters. After this event, the secretary-general Avi Shoshani of IPO declared to London's The Times newspaper that the orchestra would never perform in the UK again.

IPO performed initial concerts with the help of conductance by Toscanini, in December 1936. It featured the music of Richard Wagner.
American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (AFIPO) is one of the non-profit organizations that are dedicated to the better financial future of IPO. The orchestra is the winner of the Israel Prize in music, which took place in 1958. It was the first time that an organization received the Prize.
