Iron and Wine Information
Samuel “Sam” Ervin Beam (July 26, 1974) is an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Chaplin, South Carolina. He is professionally known by his stage name, Iron & Wine. He went to the Seven Oaks Elementary School and Chaplin High School. He got a bachelor’s degree in art from the Virginia Commonwealth University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. Beam specialized in painting before he completed his graduation from the Florida State University Film School and received an MFA degree. He was a film and cinematography professor at the University of Miami and Miami International University of Art & Design.
In 2002, Beam released his debut album as Iron & Wine entitled, The Creek Drank the Cradle. The album was released through the Sub Pop label. He wrote, performed, recorded, and produced that album in his home studio. The album featured side guitar, banjo, and acoustic guitars. The album’s music was compared to John Fahey, Neil Young, Elliott Smith, Simon and Garfunkel, and Nick Drake.
On March 23, 2004, Beam released his second studio album entitled, Our Endless Numbered Days. This album was recorded more professionally than the first one, produced by Brian Deck. The focus of the album was still on acoustic material.
Other studio albums released by Beam include The Shepherd’s Dog (2007), Kiss Each Other Clean (2011), Ghost on Ghost (2013), Sing into my Mouth (2015), Love Letter for Fire (2016), Beast Epic (2017), and Years to Burn (2019).
