Iris Dement Information
Iris Luella DeMent (January 5, 1961) is an American singer and songwriter from Paragould, Arkansas. Her music is defined as Americana, country folk, gospel, alternative country, and folk. DeMent was raised in a Pentecostal household and was exposed to country and gospel music during her childhood. At five, she sang as a part of "the little DeMent sisters" but forgot her words during the performance, causing her to avoid public performances for a while.
"Our Town" was the first song written by DeMent, inspired by a drive through a boarded-up Midwest town. This song was written when she was 25, and it was played in the closing scene for the final episode of Northern Exposure (July 26, 1995), a CBS television series. The first album by DeMent was Infamous Angel, which came out in 1992. The album was based upon the theme of small-town life, religious skepticism, and human frailty. "Let the Mystery Be" was the hit song in her first album covered by several artists such as Alive Stuart and 10,000 Maniacs.
DeMent's other notable studio albums are My Life 1993, The Way I Should 1996, Lifeline 2004, Sing the Delta 2012, and The Trackless Woods 2015. Some of her hit songs are "Sweet is the Melody," "Wasteland of the Free," and "Our Town." DeMent has worked with a few labels throughout her career, including Warner Bros., Flariella Records, and Rounder Records (Philo). Her associated acts include John Prine, Josh Turner, and Greg Brown. DeMent has also sung duets with Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle. She was also the winner of the Americana Trailblazer Award in 2017 and has been nominated twice for Grammy Awards.
