Idaho Steelheads Information
The Idaho Steelheads play in the Eastern Conference Hockey League (ECHL) as an American professional minor league ice hockey club. The team is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. Since the 2016–17 season, the Steelheads have competed in the Mountain Division of the ECHL's Western Conference.
The Steelheads get their name from the rainbow trout, a fish endemic to Idaho's rivers and streams that migrates to the ocean and is a favorite target of local anglers. Despite this, the team's primary and secondary logos formerly featured a puck bouncing off a hockey mask and the state of Idaho, respectively.
Idaho's alternative logo features a fish, which was added during the rebranding process before the 2006–07 season. The Steelheads adopted the trout as their primary emblem following the 2011 departure of the Victoria Salmon Kings.
In 2003, the WCHL's teams, including the Steelheads, moved to the ECHL. The team has been an affiliate of the Dallas Stars of the NHL since the 2005-06 season. From the 2009–10 season, the Dallas Stars have had an American Hockey League affiliate as the Texas Stars of Austin.
When the 2018–19 season ended, the Steelheads never failed to make the playoffs in the ECHL or the WCHL. The Steelheads' twenty-year playoff streak in 2016-17 made them the longest current playoff streak in professional hockey. It was when the Detroit Red Wings were ousted from the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs.
