Hudson Valley Philharmonic Information
The Hudson Valley Philharmonic is an American symphony orchestra. It is based in Poughkeepsie, New York. The orchestra, also known as HVP, started in 1932 and served the Hudson Valley region. HVP offers a series of concert performances in the Bardavon 1869 Opera House of the Ulster Performing Arts Center.
HVP regularly makes guest appearances at festival venues cuhas Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, the Bowdoin Park pavilion of Dutchess County, and SUNY New Paltz Piano Summer. Four Poughkeepsie businessmen who also dedicated string players, including Dr. Charles Hoffman, Charles T. Miller, Sydney Fleishman, and George Hagstrom, formed the nucleus consisting of local musicians who then evolved into the Dutchess County Philharmonic Orchestra in 1932. Hagstrom was the first conductor of the orchestra made up of professionals and amateurs alike.
There were several music students from surrounding high schools. Local backing enabled the DCPO to perform its debut series of public concerts in 1934. It had already grown to 93 musicians by the 1940s. The repertoire of DCPO was largely classical, including works by local composers and some contemporary music.
The orchestra presented a program of two Norwegian composers, Sparre-Olsen and Grieg, under Maestro Ole Windingstad on October 29, 1953. It was presented at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
