Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Information
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association runs the symphony orchestra known as the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra (HBO), which performs almost exclusively at the Hollywood Bowl. From its inception in 1990 until the end of the 2006 Hollywood Bowl season, the orchestra was headed by John Mauceri. He held the positions of Conductor, then Principal Conductor, and finally Director during this time. Now he is the Founding Director.
Thomas Wilkins began a two-year tenure as the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor in the summer of 2008 after being selected for the position in March 2008. Wilkins's contract was renewed many times until 2014, when he was elevated to "Principal Conductor." Many of the eighty to one hundred musicians who make up the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra are regulars at Hollywood film studios, regional orchestras, and other entertainment institutions.
Players from the Los Angeles Philharmonic's regular roster do not participate in the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Orchestras, mostly from the Los Angeles region, have regularly performed at the Bowl since 1922. Under the baton of conductor Eugene Goossens, the "Hollywood Bowl Orchestra" was formed in 1927. In 1928, the orchestra recorded a set of symphonies for Victor, which were given the unique title "Symphonies beneath the Stars" because they were captured live in an outdoor setting.
