Hiss Golden Messenger is a folk music band that MC Taylor leads. Taylor's own recording company, "Heaven & Earth Magic Recording Company," published the band's early recordings. Country Hai East Cotton, the band's debut album, was published in a limited edition of 500 copies in 2009 on Taylor's label. The band's worldwide first album, Bad Debt, was published through Black Maps in 2010.
Rock, blues, gospel, swamp pop, funk, jazz, bluegrass, rhythm and blues, country soul, dub, country, and folk are among the musical styles represented by the band. The band's sound has also been described as "alternative country" and "country rock." The Beatles, The Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield are among the band's primary inspirations. Will Oldham and Bill Callahan have been compared to the band.
The band signed to Merge Records in April 2014, releasing its fifth album entitled, Lateness of Dancers on September 9, 2014. They've since released three more full-length albums, as well as remastered versions of Bad Debt, Poor Moon, and Haw through Merge. At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, their album Terms of Surrender was nominated for Best Americana Album. The band has released several other studio albums such as Hallelujah Anyhow (2017), Virgo Fool (2018), Terms of Surrender (2019), and Quietly Blowing It (2021).
