Hirie Information
In the middle of the decade, Hawaiian singer and songwriter Hirie turned her global citizenship into a lush and bright strain of reggae pop. The Filipino-born, Italian-raised, Oahu-based musician had a bit of a breakout with her positively centered 2016 record Wandering Soul and later built on that popularity with 2019's Dreamer, backed by a six-piece band.
Hirie grew up in a multicultural environment due to her father's employment for the United Nations. She felt a strong connection to island music from her birthplace's Filipino background to the sunny reggae sounds of her adopted home, which shaped the bright, laid-back pop of her self-titled debut album in 2013. She teamed up with the cooperative Rootsfire label for her second album and engaged producer Danny Kalb.
With the help of her San Diego-based backing band, she created a wider sound with horns, dub techniques, and psychedelic textures on 2016's Wandering Soul. Trevor Hall, Nahko Bear, and Nattali Rize made appearances as well. In 2019, she released Dreamer, a collection of songs that ranged from casual reggae to ska-influenced rock and pleasant pop.
