Heather Cox Richardson Information
Richardson is a Professor of History at Boston College specializing in the American Civil War, Reconstruction, the American West, and the Plains Indians. She's a history professor who has worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Richardson's debut book, the Greatest Nation on Earth (1997), began as her Harvard dissertation.
Richardson researched Republican economic policy during the war after being inspired by Eric Foner's study on pre-Civil War Republican ideology. She argued that Republican free labor doctrine was continued in their efforts to construct an activist federal government during the Civil War. Six of Richardson's works focus on politics and history. Richardson launched his acclaimed historical research hub werehistory.org in 2014.
She co-hosted the NPR show Freak Out and Carry On in 2017 and 2018. Richardson has recently begun posting "Letters from an American," a weekly newsletter that places contemporary events into the broader context of American history. As of the end of 2020, she has more subscribers to her newsletter than anybody else on Substack combined. With historian Joanne B. Freeman, Richardson hosts the podcast Now & Then. Richardson spoke with President Joe Biden in February 2022.
