Hartford Symphony Orchestra Information
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is an orchestra based in Hartford, Connecticut. It presents no less than 230 concerts every year and entertains more than 110,000 people. An extensive array of Education and Community Activities is served by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, with more than 22,000 individuals in Hartford as well as the surrounding communities. Almost 2,000 donors and 4,500 subscribers support the orchestra. The Federal Emergency Relief Corporation established the orchestra to support struggling musicians who were going through the economic depression.
Many music directors have worked for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra to date including Angelo Coniglione (1934-1936), Jacques Gordon (1936-1938), Leon Barzin (1938-1941), Moshe Paranov (1947-1953), George Heck (1947-1953), Fritz Mahler (1953-1965), Arthur Winograd (1965-1984), Michael Lankester (1985-2000), Edward Cumming (2001-2011), and Carolyn Kuan. Carolyn is the current music director for the orchestra who has been in this position since 2011.
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is also known as one of three orchestras in North America that are honored with the MetLife Award for Excellence in Community Engagement in 2004. The orchestra went on tour with Andrea Bocelli and received the Governor's Arts Award, recognizing its remarkable achievement and contributions to the arts in Connecticut. The symphony presented a special Bicentennial series in 1976 featuring brand-new and popular American music on every program. The Hartford Symphony Orchestra has always presented the finest guest soloists from all around the world, including Richard Stoltzman, Itzhak Perlman, Tonny Bennett, and Andre Watts.
