Harlem Quartet Information
Harlem Quartet is an American string quartet with the current lineup of the quartet consisting of Felix Umansky (cellist), Jaime Amador (violist), Melissa White (second violinist), and Ilmar Gavilan (first violinist). The group was formed in 2006, and debuted in the fall of that same year at Carnegie Hall during the Sphinx Organization’s 10th-anniversary gala concert and performed again in January 2007.
In December 2008, Harlem Quartet collaborated with cellist Carter Brey for an audience at the Library of Congress. The group has been featured on the Art Beat section of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, WQXR-FM, the Today Show, CNN, and WNBC. The band released its first CD under the White Pine Music in 2007 entitled “Take the “A” Train.”
Harlem Quartet opened the 2009-10 seasons as featured soloists on the national Sphinx Chamber Orchestra Tour. They performed coast-to-coast, including Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, Oberlin College, Eastman School of Music, and Carnegie Hall. The group has performed at the White House as guests of President Obama and Michelle Obama.
The quartet released two more notable albums after “Take the “A” Train,” including “Paul Chihara: Love Music” (2011), Delights & Dances (2013). The group has earned many achievements throughout its career, including the 2013 Grammy Award for Mozart Goes Dancing.
