His album, Family Tradition, was a breakthrough in the late 1970s, and he led the outlaw country movement.

In 2025, Jr. embarked on a nationwide tour to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Family Tradition. There will be special guests, including the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Joe Nichols, and fans will be treated to the old songs that solidified his place in country music.
