Gustavo Gimeno Information
Gustavo Gimeno (1976) is a conductor from Spain. As a child, Gimeno studied drums and piano. Gimeno joined the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's (KCO) percussion department in 2001 and was designated principal percussionist in April 2002. Gimeno continued his studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, focusing on conducting during his time with the KCO. Mariss Jansons encouraged and mentored him, and he joined the KCO as an assistant conductor to Jansons. He has taught master's courses alongside Ed Spanjaard, Iván Fischer, and Hans Vonk. Claudio Abbado and Bernard Haitink are two such conductors that have influenced Gimeno.
In Amsterdam, Gimeno obtained more conducting experience with other orchestras. He was the chief conductor of the Amsterdams Symphonie Orkest Con Brio from 2009 to 2012. From 2012 to 2013, he was the chief conductor of Het Orkest Amsterdam. In 2013, he left the KCO to pursue a career as a conductor. In February 2014, Gimeno gained international recognition when he substituted for Jansons as guest conductor of the KCO in a concert that featured the Dutch premiere of Magnus Lindberg's Piano Concerto No 2.
Gimeno conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for the first time in February 2018. (TSO). The TSO announced Gimeno's appointment as its next music director, commencing with the 2020-2021 season and a five-year initial contract based on this guest visit.
