Greg Brown Information
Greg Brown (July 2, 1949) is an American folk musician born in Fairfield, Iowa. Brown grew up in a musical family in the Hacklebarney region of southwestern Iowa. Brown performed live music and pursued his songwriting career in Iowa after traveling with a band.
Brown’s official career began when he toured and had regular performances on A Prairie Home Companion during the 1980s. He distributed two albums entitled 44 & 66 (1980) and The Iowa Waltz (1981). Soon one of his friends founded a record company named Red House Records, and Brown was the first recording artist to sign on. He released an album in 1986 entitled Songs of Innocence and of Experience, which was based on poems by the great William Blake.
Some of the other notable albums by Brown so far include In the Dark with You (1985), One More Goodnight Kiss (1988), Down in There (1990), Bathtub Blues (1993), Slant 6 Mind (1997), Over and Under (2000), Down in the Valley: Barn Aid Benefit Concert (2001), Live at the Black Sheep (2003), If I Had Known: Essential Recordings, 1980-96 (2003), The Evening Call (2006), and Live from the Big Top (2007). Songs of Greg Brown (Prudence Johnson) (1991) and Going Driftless: An Artist’s Tribute to Greg Brown (Various artists) (2002) are the two tribute albums by Brown.
