Greensboro Symphony Orchestra Information
Greensboro Symphony Orchestra was founded to enrich the cultural life of Greensboro and the surrounding areas. The orchestra works through the promotion, development, and maintenance program of quality music education. A group of young musicians ensembled at the Woman’s College (now UNCG) under the direction of Henry Fuchs. H. Hugh Altvater, the Dean of Music at the Woman’s College, formally organized the group as the Greensboro Orchestra in 1939.
Soon after its inception, Greensboro Symphony Orchestra became a member of the American Symphony Orchestra League. It initially gained considerable community support when Concertmaster George Dickieson, head of the Woman’s College Violin Department, was selected as the orchestra’s conductor in 1959. Some of the other notable past conductors of the orchestra are Sheldon Morgenstern, Dr. Peter Paul Fuchs, Maestro Fuchs, and Paul Anthony McRae.
The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra is a notable member of the League of American Orchestras. The orchestra is also a funded member of the ArtsGreensboro and the North Carolina Arts Council. The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra is known for offering a comprehensive suite of education programs. Some of the programs include OrKIDStra, School Concert Programs, community programs, The Lillian Rauch Beginning Strings Program at elementary schools, and the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra program.
