Gospelfest Information
McDonald's Gospelfest was first held in 1983, with support from McDonald's Corporation and the McDonald's Tri-State Owners' Association. This event has been a significant fundraiser for local educational possibilities. Millions of dollars in grants and scholarships have been distributed. Palace Theater, the Hammerstein Ballroom, Westbury Music Fair, Newark Symphony Hall, Madison Square Garden, and New York City Center have hosted competition acts over the years.
In 2008, the event's 25th year, it moved to its current location, Prudential Center. WABC has aired segments of the program, and in 2000 and 2001, the station was recognized with New York Emmy Awards in the "Religious Programming" category for their efforts. Since 2006, WWOR-TV has been airing the program. Founded by A. Curtis Farrow, who serves as the festival's director and presenter, Irving Street Rep presents an annual Gospelfest in Newark.
