The stage name Girl Talk generally knows Gregg Michael Gillis (October 26, 1981). He is an American DJ who is polished in creating mashups and digital sampling. Gillis is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While he was a student at Chartiers Valley High School in his hometown, Gillis started to experiment with electronic music and sampling. After only a few average collaborations, he began his solo project by the name “Girl Talk.” During this project, he was still a student of biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio).
Before his music career, Gillis used to work as an engineer. He quit his engineering job in May 2007 and began focusing on his music career solely. Gillis produces remixes that are of mashup-style. Squarepusher and Aphex Twin are said to be the musical inspirations of Gillis. He also mentioned his interest in punk rock, hip-hop, and pop genre along with Merzbow, a noise music artist.
The mashup released by Gillis is called "a lawsuit waiting to happen" by The New York Times Magazine. Gillis was also heavily featured in the 2008 open-source documentary by the name; RiP!: A Remix Manifesto. He is more into producing original songs rather than full-length albums.
Some of the notable discographies created by Gillis under his stage name are; Secret Diary CD (2002, Illegal Art), Unstoppable CD (2004, Illegal Art), Night Ripper CD (2006, Illegal Art), Feed the Animals CD (2008, Illegal Art), and All Day (2010, Illegal Art). The three of his EPs are Stop Cleveland Hate 12" (2004, 12 apostles), Bone Hard Zaggin' 7" (2006, 333 recordings), and Broken Ankles (with Freeway) (2014, Girl Talk Music).
December 7, 2010, is named "Gregg Gillis Day" by the hometown of Gillis, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
