Ginger Root Information
Midnight Oil is an Australian rock band. The group's current lineup consists of Martin Rotsey, Jim Moginie, Rob Hirst, and Peter Garrett. Hirst, Moginie, and original bassist Andrew James established the band in Sydney in 1972 under the name Farm; the following year, they brought on Garrett; in 1976, they changed their name; and the following year, they brought on Rotsey. From 1980 to 1987, Peter Gifford was the band's bass player, and from 1987 until he died in 2020, Bones Hillman filled that position. As of the year 2022, Midnight Oil has sold over 20 million records around the globe.
After releasing their self-titled debut record in 1978, Midnight Oil attracted a devoted fan base at home despite being largely ignored by the music industry. The band gained a larger following in the United States and across Australasia with the release of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (1982). The album featured the hit songs "Power and the Passion" and "US Forces.
After the release of their 1987 album Diesel and Dust, the band became famous all over the globe. The plight of indigenous Australians was brought into the spotlight by the album's songs "The Dead Heart" and "Beds Are Burning," the latter of which reached the top of the charts in several countries. Blue Sky Mining (1990) and Earth, Sun, and Moon (by Midnight Oil) became international hits. (1993).
