Gill Shaham Information
Gil Shaham (February 19, 1971) is an American violinist. He was born in Urbana, Illinois. Gil Shaham attended and eventually graduated from New York's Horace Mann School. Moving to Jerusalem with his family when he was two, he began studying violin at the Rubin Academy of Music at seven, receiving annual scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. He then received a scholarship to the Juilliard School and studied at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado with Dorothy DeLay and Jens Ellermann. Both he and his sister, Orli, attended classes at Columbia.
At 10, Shaham made his solo debut with the Jerusalem Symphony. Less than a year later, he played with the Israel Philharmonic, the premier orchestra in Israel. When Shaham was only 11 years old, he took first place in the Claremont Competition and was accepted to Juilliard, where he studied under Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang.
In 1989, when Shaham was a senior at Horace Mann, he took the stage with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall to play the Bruch and Sibelius violin concertos instead of an ill Itzhak Perlman. Shaham was awarded the Premio Internazionale from the Accademia Chigiana in Siena in 1992 and the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990.
Shaham's resume includes appearances with the likes of the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
