Gil Shaham Information
Gil Shaham (February 19, 1971) is an American violinist. He was born in Urbana, Illinois. Gil Shaham attended the Horace Mann School in New York and graduated. He began studying violin at the Rubin Academy of Music at seven, thanks to annual scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation after his family relocated to Jerusalem when he was two. Shaham is a music professor at the Bard College Conservatory of Music and a resident of New York City. Adele Anthony, a musician, is the man he married.
At age 10, Shaham made his solo debut with the Jerusalem Symphony. Less than a year later, he performed with the Israel Philharmonic, the country's premier orchestra. At 11, Shaham took first place in the Claremont Competition, which led to his acceptance to Juilliard.
In 1989, while he was still a senior at Horace Mann, Shaham advanced in his career when he stood in for an ill Itzhak Perlman to play the Bruch and Sibelius violin concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. Shaham was awarded the Premio Internazionale from the Accademia Chigiana in Siena in 1992 and the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990. Since 1989, Shaham has been using the "Comtesse de Polignac," a Stradivarius violin from 1699 that was loaned to him by the Stradivarius Society of Chicago.
